The purpose of this study was to design a succession model based on the competence of sports managers. The present has been done with a qualitative research approach. The statistical population of the research in the qualitative section includes experts and informants in the field of sports management. For qualitative research, purposive sampling method was used for sampling for in-depth interviews and sampling continued until the research reached theoretical saturation and adequacy (16 interviews).Three overlapping processes of open coding, axial coding and selective coding were used to analyze the data. It should be noted that these analyzes were performed with the help of Maxqda software. The analysis of the findings showed that competencies and their levels are a function of three levels: individual, organizational and strategic.Requirements for competency-based succession include effective program implementation, programming, talent management, organizational needs identification, promotion path, training, process evaluation, organizational support, and foresight. Finally, it was found that individual development, organizational maturity and organizational readiness are the consequences of the substitution program model.It should be noted that of the set of requirements, the requirements of talent management, program, identification of organizational needs, process evaluation and organizational support have an impact on the success of sports managers based on competence.
