Abstract

This study aims to understand the role of media in shaping and intensifying the generational gap among youth in the city of Yazd. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach based on the grounded theory method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 single young people aged 18 to 35 who were living with their families. Data analysis was carried out in three stages:open, axial, and selective coding. The analysis resulted in the extraction of 182 concepts,27 subcategories, 9 main categories, and one core category. The core category of the study, “Two Media Worlds in One Home,” reflects the simultaneous presence of two different systems of meaning within the family environment. The findings indicate that new media, by creating differences in patterns of media consumption, attitudes, and communication styles between parents and children in Yazd, provide the context for the emergence of generational tensions within the family. In this regard, young people’s distrust of official media, their stronger inclination toward new media, and differences in the interpretation and evaluation of media messages have led to communicative tensions and emotional distance between the two generations. Moreover, parental control and restrictions on media use are often met with resistance from children, further deepening this divide.Overall, the findings suggest that media are not merely tools for information transmission but also arenas for redefining identity, values, and intergenerational relationships within the family. As such, they can contribute to the intensification or reproduction of the generational gap in the context of everyday life between parents and children in Yazd.
